Bible in a Year (The Story) Podcast

Bible in a Year (The Story) podcast features Professor Rachel Bodell, a marketing storyteller who teaches marketing, innovation, and leadership at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA University). She will not only read the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation in one year, but she will share all the resources that have helped her to understand the Bible as one unfolding connected story along the way through short commentaries and reflections from biblical scholars, most of which read original biblical languages like Hebrew and Greek (e.g., Dr. Tim Mackie, N.T. Wright, Dr. Carmen Imes, Dr. Jeannine Hanger, Dr. James Petitfils, Kristi Mclelland, Dr. John Walton, Dr. Michael Heiser, and Dr. Lucy, Peppiatt) By 2024, we hope to additionally offer special episodes from the renowned Bible scholars themselves that will help you understand the context of hard-to-understand stories within the meta-narrative of the Bible. We want to help you not only listen but hear what God is saying through the Bible every year and grow in your understanding, practice, and re-telling of the story to others as you learn more about how all the pieces of the Bible fit together to tell the GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD with a God that is inviting us to participate in the story as it is unfolding today! Each episode is about 15 minutes and includes two to three scripture readings and a short commentary and reflection with suggested biblical scholar sources (e.g. The Bible Project and Premiere Insights) for this is our prayer ”that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God” (Phil 1:9-11). Some passages of the Bible and commentary reflections contain adult themes that may not be suitable for younger children - parental discretion is advised. Podcast music by Stockaudios from Pixabay. Today we read 2 Samuel 9-10, 1 Chronicles 9-10, Psalm 27, and Psalm 89. Our story in Psalm 89 may often reflect our hearts where we both sing of God's wonders and sometimes question whether God can or will deliver on His promises. We can sometimes struggle with this tension and yet this Psalm and the larger story is revealing the answer is faith in the relationship, in God himself, not clarity on all the details of if, how, when, and why. It’s belief in what we already know of God and His faithfulness to deliver on His promises. His goodness. It’s remembering and giving our heart in faith that He will, He has made a way and will deliver on His promises.
The story of King David, especially the first part, gives us a longing and anticipation for the reign of Jesus. We see David’s victory over adversaries, in 2 Samuel 8:15 we read that David exercised justice and righteousness for all his people. For a moment, that is largely what and who David reflected. He reflected the heart and leadership of God. He was contributing to a world where wrongs were righted and fairness works. We know this is what God’s kingdom is about, bringing shalom to chaos, God’s order, things being put right, restoration and redemption.
Here in 2 Samuel chapter 9, David's representative leadership was also made personal in relationships through kindness and generosity. David is caring for his best friend Jonathan's lame son, Maphibasheth. This is surprising in the sense that this son is a descendent of Saul and could be perceived as being next in line for the throne. This is faith and heart. Then in chapter 10, David is kind again, but it is spurned. It is spurned to the extent of violence and David stops it.

Day 112: Hallow the Name

Friday Jun 09, 2023

Friday Jun 09, 2023

Today we read 2 Samuel 7-8, 1 Chronicles 7-8, and Psalm 26. In this story we read about Nathan and David’s desire for a temple in Jerusalem, a permanent house or place for God in the center of Israel’s permanent central land and in the central city of that central land, if we recall Marty Solomon and Brent Billings referring to the promised land as central economically and politically to the ancient world connecting the North, South, East, and West. If you look at a map, it’s pretty cool because it connects to what we now know as Europe, Asia, and Africa. Yet, when David asks God if He can build a temple, God says no, I will build you a dynasty. David has been frequently patterning the practice of putting God first, the Jewish term is kiddush hashim, which means to hallow the name. David has been showing a commitment to kiddush hashim, honoring God’s name and reputation, remember how we talked about the privilege and responsibility of bearing God’s name as given to Adam and Eve in Genesis 2, Abraham in Genesis 12, and the people of Israel at Mount Sinai, and here we still see the importance of this in the story of King David and the people of Israel which is pointing to Jesus Christ and the body of Christ.

Today we read 2 Samuel 5-6, 1 Chronicles 5-6, and Psalm 25. This story seems to point to following Jesus Christ as king and the people being a part of the body of Christ, really cool. It is reflected in the story of the people of Israel stating they are the bone and flesh and David is the King of Israel in 1 Samuel 5 verse 1. This verse is essentially repeated in 1 Chronicles 11:1 and later in Ephesians 5:30 among other places. David is unifying Israel and pointing to God as first and central, David is seeking to bring shalom to chaos, a kingdom of shalom in sharp contrast to the empire kingdom.

Today we read 2 Samuel 3-4 and 1 Chronicles 3-4, and Psalm 24. This story teaches us something important about David that the author seems to want us to know based on the pattern and the two stories back to back regarding the response to enemies. There is wisdom in wanting to make our enemies friends and mourning our enemies, not celebrating their demise. The point is not about giving trust to someone who is not worthy, but to keep or allow a door to be open for the “if” or “when” an enemy may want to come home. They too might come to a place where they want to be reconciled and forgiven by God. To do this and to know how requires God’s wisdom. This story is about forgiveness, ending a cycle of violence, and recognizing there may be God’s wisdom in making an enemy who shows signs of being trustworthy and a softening heart, to become a friend, as was the case with David and Abner. The point about ending cycles of violence, mourning an enemy, and following God’s way is also emphasized in the story about David’s response to the murder of Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son.

Today we read 2 Samuel 1-2, 1 Chronicles 1-2, and Psalm 13. We start two new books, enriching our understanding of “the” story. We recap where we are in the larger story and learn about King David’s response to King Saul’s death. David goes to God for what to do first as the anointed king, and he is called to Hebron, the place where Abraham is from. We learn that not everyone views David as the next king of Israel, yet. We also read about the genealogies that lead to the messianic king in 1 Chronicles. Both stories offer a glimmer of hope and create a sense of anticipation for the future messianic king and the new second temple.

Today we read 1 Samuel 29-31 and Psalm 18. This is a story about God raising up David as he walks by faith and giving Saul over to the adversary he desires over God himself. This is the end of 1st Samuel. The prophecy is fulfilled, and Saul is killed in battle. It’s a story reminder to walk by faith and not by sight. What might look like weakness or defeat, may in fact be micro-actions of God towards His architecture of victory. This story also reminds us to remember and obey, wholeheartedly pursue God’s heart to avoid the adversary mastering us as we saw happen to Saul where Saul wanted a relationship with God on his terms for his reputation and not a relationship with God for God’s purposes and His in all capitals reputation.

Today we read 1 Samuel 27-28 and Psalms 23, 56, and 63. Today we read about Saul's desperation to hear God, but His desperation is for his own self-preservation and reputation, not God's reputation or purpose. This story begged the question of me, how do I respond to God in desperation? Is it surrender or is it self-determination? Do I yield on my knees to God, surrendering my sin for His atonement and yielding my portion of power and authority to represent Him as the King of my heart and life OR do I go to God to hear Him for my comfort alone for what I want and need alone for the outcome I want singularly and if I don’t hear what I want or need I take the actions to try and make what I want happen on my terms? Yikes! So much to think about.

Today we read 1 Samuel 24-26 and Psalms 54 and 57. This story is about David’s many adventures before becoming king. It’s about David waiting for God and asking God what to do when conflict and danger arise instead of taking the opportunity to kill Saul. Even though David was appointed king several chapters ago, we see David’s faithfulness to wait on the Lord’s timing and method, even if or when David may not see the when or how he will become king.
