Bible in a Year (The Story) Podcast
Bible in a Year (The Story) podcast features Professor Rachel Bodell, a marketing storyteller who teaches marketing, innovation, and leadership at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA University). She will not only read the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation in one year, but she will share all the resources that have helped her to understand the Bible as one unfolding connected story along the way through short commentaries and reflections from biblical scholars, most of which read original biblical languages like Hebrew and Greek (e.g., Dr. Tim Mackie, N.T. Wright, Dr. Carmen Imes, Dr. Jeannine Hanger, Dr. James Petitfils, Kristi Mclelland, Dr. John Walton, Dr. Michael Heiser, and Dr. Lucy, Peppiatt) By 2024, we hope to additionally offer special episodes from the renowned Bible scholars themselves that will help you understand the context of hard-to-understand stories within the meta-narrative of the Bible. We want to help you not only listen but hear what God is saying through the Bible every year and grow in your understanding, practice, and re-telling of the story to others as you learn more about how all the pieces of the Bible fit together to tell the GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD with a God that is inviting us to participate in the story as it is unfolding today! Each episode is about 15 minutes and includes two to three scripture readings and a short commentary and reflection with suggested biblical scholar sources (e.g. The Bible Project and Premiere Insights) for this is our prayer ”that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God” (Phil 1:9-11). Some passages of the Bible and commentary reflections contain adult themes that may not be suitable for younger children - parental discretion is advised. Podcast music by Stockaudios from Pixabay. Today we read 2 Kings 5, Hosea 1-3, and Psalm 101. We read a story about God pursuing Assyrian Captain Naaman, an enemy of Israel, through leprosy, an Israeli slave girl, kings, a prophet - Elisha, and the Jordan River. It wasn't the prophet or the river that healed Naaman, it was Yahweh God and it was a conversion moment for Naaman. Even though he would return to his pagan country, Naaman declared there is no other God but Yahweh, took dirt to remind him of this story and to build his altar to God at home, he even asked forgiveness for the appearance of worshiping the gods of his country because his heart was God's now. We also begin the story of the prophet Hosea in the time of one of the worst kings of the Northern Kingdom. God called him to marry and stayed married to his unfaithful wife. This was a story in a story about God and Israel whom God pursues in love and compassion and Israel rejects, experiences defeat and exile, and yet there is hope and a future of restoration, atonement, redemption because of Him.

Today we read 2 Kings 1-2, 2 Chronicles 24-25, and Psalm 69-70. In this story, we start 2nd Kings and read the transition from the prophet Elijah to the prophet Elisha whose request is to have a double portion of spirit and his influence will be a touch less fiery but the author will write about twice as many miracles that Elisha performed as the successor of Elijah. We also read about a king whom God delivers a victory and instead of being grateful and faithful to God, he turns and worships the idols of the people and land God gave into his hands. This is a reminder that when God delivers a victory and gives us gifts we do not worship the gifts or the status of victory but the God who gave the gift, the portion of power and agency, the blessing for the purpose of being a blessing.

Today we read 1 Kings 17-18, 2 Chronicles 18-19, and Song of Songs 6. In this story, we are introduced to the fiery prophet, Elijah. He reminds us of the drought that would often befall seasons of unfaithfulness in the Torah and how God would provide for His people in these seasons. Then, when God calls an end to the drought, and tasks Elijah with telling King Ahab, Elijah creates an elaborate contest to remind the Northern tribes of Israel who had drifted to Baal and Asherah worship under King Ahab’s wife, Jezebel. The people are called to make a decision, to return to their faith in God, they remain silent even after Yahweh God prevails over Baal and Asherah bringing consuming fire. We are also reminded that God gives us a blessing, a portion of power and authority and we cannot take from others but gently knock and wait for the invitation to become one in a close partnered relationship.
