Bible in a Year (The Story) Podcast
Bible in a Year (The Story) podcast features Professor Rachel Bodell, a marketing storyteller who teaches marketing, innovation, and leadership at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA University). She will not only read the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation in one year, but she will share all the resources that have helped her to understand the Bible as one unfolding connected story along the way through short commentaries and reflections from biblical scholars, most of which read original biblical languages like Hebrew and Greek (e.g., Dr. Tim Mackie, N.T. Wright, Dr. Carmen Imes, Dr. Jeannine Hanger, Dr. James Petitfils, Kristi Mclelland, Dr. John Walton, Dr. Michael Heiser, and Dr. Lucy, Peppiatt) By 2024, we hope to additionally offer special episodes from the renowned Bible scholars themselves that will help you understand the context of hard-to-understand stories within the meta-narrative of the Bible. We want to help you not only listen but hear what God is saying through the Bible every year and grow in your understanding, practice, and re-telling of the story to others as you learn more about how all the pieces of the Bible fit together to tell the GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD with a God that is inviting us to participate in the story as it is unfolding today! Each episode is about 15 minutes and includes two to three scripture readings and a short commentary and reflection with suggested biblical scholar sources (e.g. The Bible Project and Premiere Insights) for this is our prayer ”that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God” (Phil 1:9-11). Some passages of the Bible and commentary reflections contain adult themes that may not be suitable for younger children - parental discretion is advised. Podcast music by Stockaudios from Pixabay. 1 Kings 15, 2 Chronicles 16-17, and Song of Songs 4. Like the judges in the book of Judges where the leaders became progressively less faithful to God, here the kings of the North, Israel gets progressively less faithful and leads the tribes of the North away from the Lord. The Southern kings struggle where some start faithful and fall away, are somewhat faithful sometimes, but Yahweh still seems to remain somewhat central in their world. We also discuss three Hebrew words for love being described in the story of love poems, ahava - commitment, rayah - best friend feelings, and dowd - sexual desire for intimacy. These all seem to be important in this romantic relationship that seems to be about marriage using imagery that has connection to Genesis 2, Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden.

1 Kings 14, 2 Chronicles 14-15, and Song of Songs 3. This story tells more of the progression of the divided kingdom with the northern king being faithless and leading Israel into faithlessness. The consequences are made clear. The southern king of Judah and Benjamin also became faithless and led some into faithlessness. Yet, his son Asa became a faithful king and led the two tribes in the south into faithfulness.

Today we read 1 Kings 13, 2 Chronicles 12-13, and Song of Solomon (Song of Songs) 2. Today the story reminds us of the importance of listening to God’s word and direction over our life and not allowing, even reputable people, to turn our steps away from the directions God gave us. This story reminds us of God’s grace and the cycles of redemption. We’re reminded by the prophet of the power and importance of intercession for the rebellious. How God remains faithful and we struggle with faithfulness, falling away, remembering, receiving God’s grace, and restoration. Even in consequences and periods of exile, God will be faithful to His promises and deliver.

Today we read 1 Kings 12, 2 Chronicles 10-11, and Song of Solomon 1. In this story, we’ve gone back to the narrative of Israel as a kingdom that was united under David and then Solomon, but now, the story is going to turn; as was promised as a result of Solomon’s heart change and failure to follow God. We are now headed for a divided kingdom story. Divided between themselves and largely pulling away from God. The northern kingdom often called Israel with 10 of the tribes and their capital in Samaria and the southern kingdom which consisted of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin with their capital in Jerusalem. We learned the risk and result of King Rahaboam seeking the advise and confirmation he wants to hear and King Jaraboam making his own religion for the 10 tribes of Israel to maintain the security of his kingship and avoid the people returning to Jerusalem.

Today we read Mark 15-16, and Psalm 22. This story ends the gospel according to Mark. We’re reminded that Mark’s audience were the Romans and biblical scholars see this telling of Jesus’s crucifixion as a description of the nine steps to become an emperor, a king. Except the initial intent seems to be a mockery, until the end, when the Roman centurion acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah. Shalom instead of empire is the way. The story ends with a question, will the Roman’s choose faith or fear?

Today we read Mark 13-14, Psalm 68. Today is a story about the New Passover and Jesus most directly states that He is the Messiah and while He is standing before the leaders of the empire on that day (for rescue mission redemptive purposes), they will stand before Him, one day soon.

Today we read Mark 5-8, Psalm 21, and 23. It’s a set of stories about Jesus meant to help explain to the Romans who Jesus is in terms they understand related to Him as an amazing teacher and healer. This story also introduces to all how Jesus is the Messiah, the one the Old Testament pointed to and the Israelites had been waiting for, but not in the way many expected - not as a military victor but as a sacrificial servant who yielded it all to save us, to redeem us.
